Line of sight
This is a less than perfect photo of my daughter running in a relay. I wanted to encourage her to look at the big picture about giving of her best even though I chopped her head off and her team went on to come stone last. Because she is running toward the right, I placed the photo on the left and added ribbon and string elements to the right for movement. She is looking at the journaling. The date tab, and the extra paper layer stops the viewer’s eye from drifting right off the page.

3 columns
3 columns, see how I and other's played with the idea, Get it scrapped.
Stefanie Semple says, “My daughter participated in a few track events, and I wanted to get them onto one page. I used alignment to define the three columns. This arrangement let me group and separate the three different events. The middle column has a patterned paper background. This and the lack of row alignment cues the reader to read them by column ie, vertically and not from left to right.”
