Olivia's challenge 104

Another mini album from me this fortnight.

My album started off as a little 7 Gypsies card & an empty Jenni Bowlin journaling pad. I cut some lined paper for the inside & bound it together like a reporter's notepad, then stamped my title on the card. Under the card I tucked some little pieces of patterned paper like newspaper scraps.

Inside I have written about big news stories that I remember, ones that I took a personal interest in & some that have changed my life. The first major story I remember was the BSE scare back in the 90s. I was only 8 at the time but it really affected me. I never ate much red meat anyway, but as a result of the scare I haven't eaten any since then.

The first big news story I clearly remember is the day man walked on the moon. 

Journaling reads: "July 20th, 1969. The day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon - and it was my birthday!  The day was full of suspense, because we didn’t know exactly when the first man would touch the surface of the moon. We kept the TV on constantly and stayed closed to see the adventure unfold. Just 3 basic news channels back then, and most of us were watching Walter Cronkite narrate this historic event. Phil remembers trying to take pictures of the TV screen with his camera. Not too successful. It was a big deal to fulfil President Kennedy’s challenge to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. We were so proud of our country. What a great moment to share with a little girl turning nine!"

 

Another from me

I remember that Tuesday afternoon so clearly. It was sunny and the sky was blue, on the drive to visit Julie Jones I heard the news on the radio, they said a small plane had crashed into one of the world trade centre towers. Her tv was on and we watched in horror as the tower burned, people jumped and then as the second tower was hit, they repeated it over and over and it still didn’t make sense.  I struggled to process that this was no movie, but a terror attack in front of me. I got home and watched some more while making supper and bathing the children.

First one tower fell and then the other and our world was changed.

One of the first things we wanted to visit in New York was ground zero and the museum paying homage to those lives that were lost and impacted on September 11^th 2001. The museum was quite full, people were quiet, respectful , surrounded by images of terror and loss. Lt-Col Robert Darling was selling his book 24 hours inside the President’s bunker 9-11-01 the White House. I talked Andrew into buying a copy. There were photos and mementoes, a mini statue of liberty covered by ephemera left by mourners paying homage. We saw a statue of the roots of a sycamore tree that was uprooted when the towers collapsed. The sense of grief there is overwhelming.

Yet another tricky one- I didn't want to have to print out pictures of something terrible for my albums so instead I used lots of journalling cards and wrote a little bit about some of those key events from during my lifetime

1. Septemer 11 2001
I was at school that day- driving to a lesson at Dormer and the news said two planes has flown into the Twin Towers-The towers fell while I was teaching the lesson on Irish terrorism to my year 11s


2. Death of Diana- 31.8.97
I came downstairs at James' parent house to hear the news of Diana. I was due to start my first ever teaching job the very next day- I ended up spending weeks teaching lessons about her

3. November 1989 Fall of Berlin Wall
I was 15 when the Berlin Wall fell- I was jealous because our school was going a trip there the next Februaay and I had decided not to go!

4. Hillsborough Stadium Disaster 15. 4. 1989
I'd been to town with Nan and Arnie as usual and we came back to see what was going on in the FA cup football Match- Grandad told us what happened as we watched people being stretchered away

5.Death of BIn Laden May 2011
We were on holiday in Drenthe when we heard about Bin Laden- I couldn't believe how thrilled Americans were- not worried at all about revenge

6. Chernobyl 26.4.1986
I think I was staying with Nan and Grandad at the time- this was my worst nightmare come true- I was petrified about nuclear disaster at the time

7 Wedding of Kate and William 30.4.2011
I watched the Royal Wedding at home alone- I was worried Nancy would be missin out being at school but she watched it with her brothers and class on the big screen

8. Heysel Stadium 29.5.1985
I remember we were playing outside in the garden on a warm evening- I knew Dad would be watching the football- I went in to see if it had started but instead there were battles with the police
